Healthy Eating. It is enough?

Healthy Eating. It is enough?

Healthy, balanced eating can be a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach!

As a mom and a wellness professional, I strive every day to give my family quality, nutritious food. Before the birth of my first-born, my husband was very resistant to getting on my healthy bandwagon (eating more fruits and vegetables, juicing, smoothies, etc.). I admit that I had somewhat resigned to eat an average diet because it was too complicated to cook two different meals for just two people in the home and because of the bonding that takes place over a shared meal. Some people asked if we would raise our son vegetarian. My reply was always, “He will eat what we eat (so we better eat healthy even with our choices of meat).” Our tipping point came once my son began eating solids and we became more conscious of our own choices knowing we are setting an example for the future generation. Convicted, we are now ovo-lacto-vegetarian and the aim is to become vegan.

Healthy Eating. It is enough?

Every bite we put into our mouths sends a message to our bodies. Junk food says, “Break down.” Nutritious food says, “Build up.” If you look closely and what our body requires to function optimally you will find what is called essential nutrients. These essential nutrients must be obtained from food because the body cannot fuel itself. Eating a healthy, balanced, plant-based diet is optimal. But is it enough?

For example, Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that vegans and vegetarians need to look for because it is found almost exclusively in animal products. Iron, calcium, vitamin D, protein and omega-3’s may be lacking if the diet is not well rounded or supplemented.

 Healthy Eating. It is enough?

In today’s modern society we find some challenges to getting all the essential nutrients even as we are eating a healthy diet. Is healthy eating in today’s society really enough?

  • Our food supply is often grown with pesticides, insecticides and other chemicals and even GMOs.
  • Antibiotics and hormones are often found in meat and dairy products
  • Stressors (good and bad) deplete the body of nutrients
  • Toxins in the environment, in the home and personal care products also increase the demand for certain nutrients so the body can process them.

Preparing meals for a family brings its own challenges because everyone has their preferences. My husband doesn’t like tropical fruit (we live on an island. HELLO!) and my son would be happy to eat toast all day every day. It’s no wonder that even as we tout a vegetarian lifestyle we are sometimes coming up short in nourishing our bodies. We are still learning to eat a balanced diet, that’s why supplementation makes perfect sense to us. It’s like insurance that we are giving our body what it needs to function optimally.

One of the most important qualities I look for when making choices for my family’s nutrition is that it is as close to nature as possible.
